About PWTIC

This is a blog about putting weird things in coffee. I drink coffee every day, but get bored with the same old cream and sugar. I figured I might as well document my experiments for the benefit of all humankind.

I am Phronk. I’m a writer, and obviously a blogger too. You can find me elsewhere at http://www.phronk.com, or on Twitter @phronk . I write weird fiction at Forest City Pulp.

If you have suggestions or want to contribute your own tales of coffee experimentation, email suggestions [at] puttingweirdthingsincoffee (dot) com, and I may post it for all to see. The only rule is that the things I put in coffee must be things that I would tolerate eating on their own. So no, I will not put dog poop in coffee, but you’re right that it would be very weird.

Other inquiries can be sent to stuff (at) puttingweirdthingsincoffee [dot] com. Book deals pls.

I’m a big fan of coffee, but I have to admit I’m not as brave as you. I mean, sweetening with molasses instead of sugar, or something…maybe a little raspberry flavor….but. Man. You have real clankers. *nod* Best wishes on your coffee journey!

  2. August 9, 2009 9:38 pm

A question, by the time you’ve added the stuff in your coffee and blended it, does it not get cold? Or do you heat it up after blending?

  3. August 10, 2009 2:40 am

awalkabout: Hehe, thanks! I’ve never even thought of sweetening with molasses actually. I might have to try that, even though I have a fear of molasses after a childhood, uh, incident.

The Ruling Numerator: An excellent question. When blending I put all the ingredients except the coffee into the Magic Bullet first, then add the hot coffee last. It blends in 10 seconds or less and you can drink right out of the container it’s blended in, so not much heat is lost. No need for reheating.

And no I don’t work for Magic Bullet. 🙂

Have you tried HP sauce? I hear it’s delightful but haven’t tried it yet myself. I’d much prefer if you did it first.

  5. December 24, 2009 4:38 pm

HP, other barbecue sauces, and hot sauce are definitely on the list. Stay tuned!

    ideas for you:
    kool-aid
    yogurt
    pudding

    ideas i’ve tried:
whipped cream in a tub (delish)
maple syrup and butter (also delish)
‘fun sized’ candy bars (snot at the bottom problem)

    Oatmeal!
Instant cinnamon spice would probably work best.

Crushed candy canes in a cup of hot black coffee is always a post-holiday treat, also adding cinnamon red hots is a nice touch as well.

  10. February 1, 2010 9:19 pm

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I do love maple syrup and cinnamon (separate or together) in coffee.

Apparently yogurt is the worst possible thing to put in a hot drink, but I won’t knock it until I try it.

    Hey Phronk,

If you are going to put HP sauce in your coffee you should watch the film “Intermission” to get prepared:

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0332658/

I’ve got a copy you can borrow. One of the characters in it steals a case of “brown sauce” and puts it in his tea and in everything else just to try and get rid of it.

    “It’s delish man!”

haha, I asked him the same question one time, Nik. Though I thought I seen it in a Guy Ritchie film.

  14. February 24, 2010 7:42 pm

Haha thanks Nik & Ronny! I’ll have to get my hands on that if/when I try “brown sauce” in my coffee.

We truly love your website, the concept is perfect!
Just found it today and wrote a short article about it on our own blog, together with the results of our experiment with banana milkshake and coffee (not so good.. )

Seeing forward to more posts from you!

You should try a fruit called durian. Welllll. Lets say, even as a favourite local fruit where I’m from, the locals still have mixed reactions to it.

Anyway awesome site! (I love coffee too!)

  17. April 23, 2010 1:11 pm

Thanks! Mixed reactions eh? Sounds exciting! I’ll keep an eye out for durian.

We’ve all heard of honey & lemon in tea for those days when you’re under the weather. But what if you hate tea? What about honey & lemon coffee for what ails you?

Mike I met you at PodCamp and was impressed by your curiosity, dry wit and IQ/EQ. I introduced myself to you because you are one of a kind and I love that.

I know folks both in the food industry and pyschometrics. Send me an email and let’s figure out how to get you connected to your tribe.

Love your blog, I get bored and put odd things in my coffee too, so cheers!

I haven’t done it but I’ve heard that putting orange rinds (dunno if fresh or dried) in with the grounds is suppose to add flavor. Maybe throw in some chocolate for that popular Orange-Choco flavor thing.

Just found this site, big fan of coffee so I might have to try some of these. I used to work in a coffee shop, but the only extra ingredients there were syrups like mint, caramel and Irish. Nothing nearly as mad as this, but it’s certainly tempting to try.

Hey! It just occured to me. With Halloween candy going on sale, why not give Candy Corn Coffee a shot? It might not be that bad, if the candy melts before you can feel the grit.

  24. December 14, 2010 7:31 am

I actually put Jalapenos with just a few drops of lemon juice and hot sauce in my coffee. It tastes heavenly. Oh god, I think I’ll go do that right now. Trust me you HAVE to try it.

  25. January 21, 2011 2:33 pm

I just tried Red Bull and Coffee…. BARF. Avoid it unless you have a sick sense of humor. woof.

  26. September 11, 2011 12:46 pm

You may put one jigger of rhum on your coffee to add a smile on your face. Try it with your favorite coffee, you will surely love it.

Add packets of hot chocolate to coffee. I use it when I’m out of milk. It tastes like hot chocolate with a kick. It’s crazy rich if you add 2 packets of hot chocolate. Add some m&m’s or a candy cane and it’s crazy good. Party in my mouth.

A packet of hot cocoa. My mom and I called it coffee coo-coo (or cuckoo). I see Ghirardelli’s now making hot cocoa mix! Sometimes a dash of Cardamom. I can’t say I’ve ever tried real maple syrup, but I have some in my fridge!

Hi I was just looking through your site for inspiration for a speciality drink for an up coming barista competition in the UK.
I just thought I’d send a message through and let you know I successfully made a bacon cappuccino last year. I have the photos and methodology if you’re interested. It seems there is big interest in bacon coffee in the states…

I’d love to see it! You an email me (suggestions [at] puttingweirdthingsincoffee (dot) com) or post a link. I had a pretty good maple bacon coffee recently, though it was a little salty, so I haven’t quite found the perfect bacon mix.

Your email address was invalid for some reason, but I wanted to suggest soy sauce and coffee. I don’t think it would be that bad -some people already swear by salt in coffee, so why not something salty. I’ve been wanting to try it myself but haven gotten soy sauce yet. Hope you try and post about it!

    • January 7, 2023 5:03 pm

That is a great idea! Thanks very much, I’ll add it to my list. I’ll also look into why my email isn’t working.
